Propraetor
In Latin, propraetor (prōpraetor) means an ex-praetor or an official sent to govern a Roman province with the power of a praetor. The term comes from prō (acting for) plus praetōre (a praetor), meaning "one who acts as a praetor".
Praetor literally means "one who goes before" or "leader" (from praeīre, meaning "to go before" or "lead"). In ancient Rome, it was a title given to an elected government official who ranked just below a consul and served mainly as a judge or a military commander.
